Live cam on ubuntu?

Ok, here's how to do a live cam on ubuntu. I'm using a small HP mini laptop.

1. Install webcam-server. Details here:
http://hacktivision.com/index.php/2009/06/16/setting-up-an-ubuntu-webcam-server

2. Start the webcam server:
sudo webcam-server -v -g 320x240 -p 8888 -c mycam

3. Access the server:
http://localhost:8888
CTRL-R to refresh

4. Link applet to apache home dir:
/usr/local/apache2/htdocs$ sudo ln -s /usr/share/doc/webcam-server/applet/

5. Make sure apache knows location of the applet.jar file:
/usr/local/apache2/htdocs$ vi index.html

APPLET CODE = "WebCamApplet.class" archive="applet/applet.jar" WIDTH = "320" HEIGHT = "240"

6. Access the web cam:
http://localhost

-----Errors?
I got this one:
"get_cam_image(): len != img->bufsize, just letting you know"
Details about this error:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/webcam-server/+bug/318187

Fix:
(step1) install "libv4l" from here:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/lpia/libv4l-0/0.5.0-3~intrepid1

(step2) Start server like this:
# LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so webcam-server -v -g 320x240 -p 8888 -c mycam

--
If you need to install apache:
http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi#apache22
It installs by default into: /usr/local/apache2/

If I missed anything, or if anyone knows how to add sound -- let me know in comments.

Wedding checklist videos

There are several types:

1. Videos by wedding companies for "I'm willing to pay for help" consumers.

1.1. Advertise what they have (like this).
- target anyone who may potentially want to use their services.
- either long, or include only a small sample.

1.2. Advertise what they know
- target anyone, who may potentially be looking for information on weddings (here).
- describe what most people do - very general.

1.3 Elaborate on services
These videos target current customers and new employees. Example1, Example 2. These videos advertise a wedding planner person, answer common questions and set the stage for further communication. Celebrity planners are usually interviewed.

2. Videos by media companies
these guys are in entertainment business, they create videos on popular topics.
For example this one, and two. They cater to "I can do it myself" consumers.

Bring wife to interview?

Today, Erika and I went to an interview with a potential client for video work in Eatontown, NJ. She waited for me and brought lunch. After I was done she asked me a lot of questions about the interview and encouraged me to pursue video work. She seemed a bit irritated that my supposedly 30-min interview turned into 4 (four!) hours. This brought about an argument on the way back, and rightfully so. The fact that she waited for me kept me be snappy with the client and we got a lot done.

Job checklist for video editors

Wow, this guy wrote and excellent list of things to know when applying to a job as video editor.
-----
http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/tfr/2300863042.html

Hello!

NOTE: this will not be your average job ad.
The longest & most detailed ad you have EVER seen. Promise.

Hint: We are not looking for your average video editor either.

*** We are looking for an A PLAYER. ***
What is an A Player for us? Somebody at the top 10% of their class/field.
YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.
You are? READ ON!

Also, IMPORTANT: you have to be a true EDITOR at heart - and NOT a “jack of all trades” that is interested in and does everything from production to editing.
If you are not, this will not work. You are a 110% committed EDITOR. That’s what you do.
If not, you should move on to the next ad right now.

I also prepared a short video for you (plus some other useful links/info):
https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1MaWrDzlXF0sk3GK-0zwwXyzGeRPIA71mg10syB3iJro

THE 30-SECOND VERSION:

This is FULL-TIME, 40 hours per week (split up as you wish)
Starting pay: $1,500 per month; project based, as Independent Contractor
Ideally, you would be available to get started full-time very soon.

You could work from home or in our small Brooklyn Video Rec. Studio (1 block from DE KALB AV stop on L train).

You would edit MUSIC INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS (MULTI-CAM) with many of the very, very TOP JAZZ MUSICIANS (all instruments) in the world.

Besides being an ace at your craft, you NEED to be:
quick, yet VERY DETAIL-ORIENTED, responsive, resourceful & pro-active. Seriously.

STILL INTERESTED? HERE COMES THE DETAILED VERSION:

ABOUT US:
We are a small production company that produces/publishes/sells instructional videos with many-world famous jazz musicians. We have been in production for 1 year and have A LOT of editing work to be done.

We are working with top-of-the-line artists and we have very HIGH STANDARDS.
If you are used to working in environments where doing half-baked, incomplete work is ok, and that’s how you roll, too, PLEASE MOVE ON TO THE NEXT AD. It will not work.
We are a fun team, we work on fun projects, but our standards are probably higher than what you are used to.

If you haven’t yet, please WATCH THE VIDEOS & check out the docs from the LINK above!

WHEN:
Basically ASAP.
Also, we are looking for somebody who can commit to doing this for at least 12 months (hopefully longer).

WHAT:
For our projects, we shoot with 4-5 DVC PRO HD cameras and record multi-track audio through ProTools.
===> Editors will be responsible for the entire gamut of the post production workflow in everything besides audio (we have an engineer for mixing and mastering).

Duties include:

* syncing audio/video
* color correction
* cutting
* implementing feedback from the artist and director/producer
* DVD/Web compression
* basic graphics creation

WHO (WE ARE LOOKING FOR):
We are looking for a VERY serious FCP Editor.

This should either be your primary profession, or that should be your main goal.
We have a lot of editing that needs to be done, and need someone on board who is primarily interested in editing. You need to be skilled in FCP.
IF YOU ARE A *JACK OF ALL TRADES*, PLEASE DO *NOT* APPLY!
=> You must be a 100% editor with the being your main focus & interest.

While some experience with the following skills/programs is not mandatory, it is definitely preferred.

RATE YOUR SKILLS:

ON A SCALE FROM 1-10, how skilled your are with each of the following items?
Feel free to elaborate with a brief text re your experience with each item.
(LINKS to excerpts of your work would GREAT as well!):

* Color Correction
* Syncing Audio/Video
* Computer Savvy
* Multi-cam editing (If familiar: how many MC edits have you done?)
* Compression
* DVD Studio Pro
* Motion
* Photoshop
* Pluraleyes
* Cinemacraft

With so many projects, we have a VERY detailed and specific file organizational structure and STEP-BY-STEP workflow that you will be working within.
To make this job work you need to be willing to work and be creative within a detailed structure of file organization/naming and post workflow.

IF YOU HAVEN’T YET, CHECK OUT THE *SECOND* LINK/VIDEO & PDFs under #3 of the web page from the LINK ABOVE - it gives you a glimpse of our process/organizational structure.

KEY QUALITIES/TRAITS NEEDED - (besides being a kick-butt editor):

* able to follow detailed instructions/very detail-oriented
* quick-study & quick implementer
* proactive (you figure things out on your own; you START things on your own, if you see they need to get done); you are a serious PROBLEM SOLVER!
* interested in music and editing music footage (ideally familiar with Jazz - NOT necessary, though, if you are open & adapt quickly)

You take pride in doing stellar work! You are definitely NOT just half-a…ing things.

IS THIS YOU?

If it is, please respond and tell me WHY.

WOW ME.

CHECK OUT ITEM #4 OF THE WEB PAGE of the above link for this. Seriously.
That’s how we roll. Are you?

SOME QUESTIONS/ACTION ITEMS FOR YOU:
(Where applicable, feel free to ELABORATE/GIVE EXAMPLES!)

* If you have a resume, paste it in the body of your email (NO ATTACHMENTS!)
* Where do you live? (N’hood/subway stop)
* Are you currently working? (Projects? Full-time? Half-time?)
* How soon could you start full-time? (40h/week)
* If it works out: are you committed to do this for at least 12 months?

* Have you used GOOGLE DOCS before?
* Are you a “LIST MAKER”?
* Are you into “productivity” (constantly finding “better ways” of doing things?)
* Are you QUICK at what you do?
* Yet, are you still VERY detail oriented?
* Are you a problem solver? Are you PRO-ACTIVE/a self-starter? Do you figure things out ON YOUR OWN? (Give some examples - can be unrelated to editing)

* Which editing gear do you own?
* List any gear/software you do not own, but have experience with
* Which version of FCP do you have?
* Do you have Multi-cam editing experience? (If yes, how many edits done with it?)
* Why are you an editor, vs. more a “production person”? Why is this more your cup of tea?
(Again, if you do “all kinds of things”, incl. production, this will NOT work. We need somebody who is 110% serious about EDITING - not a “I do it all” kind of person.)

* Why did this ad speak to you?
* Why do you think you are a good fit for this job?
* What’s most interesting to you about this job?
* What’s least interesting to you about this job?
* What specific part of the ad triggered you to reply?
* Why is this aspect important to you?
* What’s the second-to-last bullet/item in our “Rules we live by” google doc?
* What did you think of that “Rules we live by” doc? Feel free to elaborate on the SPECIFIC items brought up in that doc... Your thoughts on them (refer to SPECIFIC ITEMS)? How do think YOU operate in those departments?
* What makes you outstanding at what you do? What makes you an A Player?
* What example UNRELATED TO VIDEO EDITING, from any other aspect of your life, illustrates that you are an A Player?

* Do you like Jazz? (If yes, what/who do you like?)

* Would you be okay to later on facilitate an opportunity for me to speak with THREE REFERENCES for an in-depth reference check? (If you just graduated: your former teachers)
* If yes: when I call your references, what would they name as your biggest strengths and your biggest weaknesses (aka areas deserving improvement)?

WANT TO GO THE EXTRA MILE? (Optional)
MAKE A SHORT WEBCAM VIDEO OF YOURSELF and tell us why you think you would be a good fit for this job.
HINT, HINT: if you go the video route, please answer all the above QUESTIONS in the video!
(The RATE YOUR SKILLS SECTION further above: answer that one in writing, please.)
Quick & dirty webcam video is just fine. Don’t script, just be yourself.

Upload it to YouTube (you can make it unlisted/private) or Viddler (you can password-protect it!) and email us the link.
(Please TEST first that it works!)

This will take you less than 30 minutes.
If that’s a turn-off for you, chances are you don’t have enough drive for whom and what we are looking for here.
If you feel like writing back “sorry, I don't have a webcam!” -> if you don't have enough drive to get off your couch and buy a $20 webcam from Radio Shack around the corner, AGAIN: chances are you don't have enough DRIVE for this gig.

Looking forward to your reply!

PLEASE NOTE: I WILL ONLY REVIEW AND REPLY TO COMPLETE SUBMISSIONS.

Thanks!

  • Location: Brooklyn or Home
  • Compensation: 1500
  • Principals only. Recruiters, please don't contact this job poster.
  • Please, no phone calls about this job!
  • Please do not contact job poster about other services, products or commercial interests.

Birds and daisies

Erika and I are sitting in the car at Joshua's soccer practice. Suddenly, a huge flock of birds flies over our heads. Hundreds of them, rushing, like a spider web of black dots that covers the sky at once. She says: look... Wow!
I look at the birds -- they remind me of spring and the happy matings games.
Erika says: how freakie... so many same things at once... scary.
Suddenly, my feeling about the birds change. They look to me as if they are ugly little creatures. That each of them has its own needs: hunger, survival instincts, desire to mate, fear of falling or being left behind by the flock.

I describe the feeling to her. She says: wow, your are very negative. Now, imagine a field of flowers moving in the wind like waves of a sea.

All over sudden, I feel warmth in my chest. I could clearly imagine the myriad of white and yellow daisies. I can almost smell them, reach out with my stretched hand and stroke them.

Do we have an invisible cord between us, a direct link from her feelings to mine? Go figure.

Alternative sources of energy... (story)

As I hiked in the woods, I stopped by for a night at a leanto. There was a man and his wife there. The wife was tired and quietly breathed in her sleeping bag. The man was making tea on the fire. When the tea was done, he pored, what looked like whiskey, in his cup and offered some to me. I didn't mind. We started to talk. He seemed distressed and I asked him why. He sighed and began his story...

I have a lot of source material -- he said -- wood. I use this wood to warm my house. It's not very efficient, but it works. Now, a friend with a chain saw offers his help chopping wood. I love it. I build a huge house 'cause I have a lot of wood now. Time goes by. I forget that sometimes I went to friends houses to warm up there and sometimes I invited them over. I have everything I need to have fun in my huge house.

Now, I also forgot that my woodpecker friend chops my own wood. And he does such good job at it that I'm running out of wood on my property. He is ready to chop. I tell him to hold on, but he points out to the contract we signed... he wants to keep chopping wood, because he wants to get paid. He is hungry for money, and he's willing to work hard.

I was anxious to know the man's plan out of his trouble. Will he try to install a solar panel to warm up his house? Will he abandon most of his house and only warm out his original small room? Will he through a party for his friends and ask for their advice?

The man telling the story stopped and reached for his sleeping bag.
Soon, I heard his snore on next to his wife. The night was cold. Logs in the fire war almost done. I looked at the myriad of stars over my head. Found the big dipper, the small one, the Polaris. The constellation of Cassiopeia shone brighter than I've ever seen it. She was here before me and before this man and his wife, and it will be here after we're gone.

And then, suddenly, it occurred to me. I was part of man's plan. He could not decide what to do with his house, because he was too worried by his problem. So, he decided to take a vacation and tell his story to people like me. Now, while I worried for him, he slept calmly in his place. I felt angry and used. This was a terrible price to pay for a cup of tea, even if the the unknown ingredient was 18 year old single malt Glenfiddich.

b-day.

Birthday today, not bad. A lot of people sent me congrats. Wow, that felt good, really good. Max came and we had a beer. Good times with Josh and Erika. Parents offered to make a party for me on Sunday. Irena said she'll come. Erika said she wants to take me out tomorrow night.

Anvention - Wave Meditation

Working the camera in my hand... I noticed that many shots on the Last Call with Carson Daly are done with a moving camera shooting a static picture. It's spices things up somehow. So, that's what I'm doing here and in the next video.

Meditative photoshoot? Yogi camera work

Today, I did another video-shoot for http://www.anvention.com.

I filmed Manu and others practicing yoga and meditated. During the session, an amazing happened for me -- I felt as if I, myself, meditated over the camera. I felt stress and bad feelings go away. As if time had stopped and there were nothing else in the world besides my camera and my subjects.

As I was looking for better shooting angles, I tried to move my arms and my feet as slowly and steadily as possible. And so this became a yoga and meditation for me. A dance of Whirling Dervishes of sorts. My muscles worked, and so did my mind... And I felt very happy afterwords.

--
There were two new practitioners I haven't met before. They were nice enough to allow me to film them. To preserve their privacy, I avoided recording of their names and faces.

Водоворот

Примерно такие советы мне дал лет 20 назад один плавец:

- не боритесь сразу же с течением, берегите силы, лучше попытайтесь выбраться из него с наименьшими энергозатратами. Для этого пробуйте пересечь течение поперек, а если оно затягивает по кругу – плывите по течению, но методично выгребая в сторону от центра;

- если не получается выбраться из водоворота, и он вас затягивает в центр все сильнее (или уже затянул), тогда следует набрать в легкие побольше воздуха и нырнуть. Будучи под водой, ищите такое течение, которое не закручивает по кругу, а выносит на поверхность. В любом водовороте такое течение существует обязательно, поэтому главное - не теряться, а найти и воспользоваться восходящим потоком, который вынесет вас наверх за пределы водоворота;

- самые опасные течения не на большой глубине, как полагают многие, а на мелководье, так как дно в таких местах, как правило, усеяно камнями, корягами, и прочим мусором, об который легко травмироваться. На мелководье развернитесь навстречу течению, выпрямьтесь во весь рост и постарайтесь ногами встать на дно, чтобы удержаться на нем. Если не получается, что ж, следует плыть по течению дальше, пока не подвернется возможность выбраться из потока в более широком месте реки, где течение существенно ослабляется;

- бывает так, что потоком вас может понести на торчащий из воды валун или ствол дерева. Удар об это препятствие грозит серьезной травмой. Понятное дело, что борьба с течением вымотала вас дальше некуда и увернуться от столкновения уже нет сил. Попробуйте в таком случае выставить ноги вперед и сгруппироваться. Ноги обязательно ослабят силу удара за счет своей амортизации, а вы тем временем получите возможность ухватиться за этот камень или дерево. В крайнем случае, выставляйте вперед руки, помните – для вас самое главное в этой ситуации, чтобы не пострадали от столкновения жизненно-важные органы;

Yoga video

Well, I actually did a clip... since my HP mini is too weak for editing video, I cut this clip right on the Canon HFS 200 camcorder. Showed the video to Manu, Daniel and Michael. Manu said that I have a good eye for detail, and that I have a very steady hand. He said when they used this camera in other shots -- the picture jerked a lot.
